My BNF list
14th-Jun-2006 04:47 am
screw it. I thought I'd do this in a day or two, but I made a preliminary list and figured "What the hell? I"m still up; this is something I can do tonight, and dammit, I'm curious as to what others think."

Thing is: this list is short. It's those writers/fans that are HUGE to me. I have so many more that I admire, that I read whatever the hell they write. But for some reason, they're not BNFs to me.

Anyway:

BNF list

[info]wesleysgirl - a nicer, more pleasant calm person (at least on LJ) I have not met. She is fierce in her defense of her friends, and not afraid to admit when she may be wrong. She also writes wonderful characters and responds to almost all fb left to her. She supports new writers with constructive criticism and her recs are awesome. She's one of the three main people responsible for me getting an LJ in the first place.

[info]janedavitt - helpful, beautiful, smart funny. TALENTED beyond all get out, prolific. A joy to have listed as my friend, even though she's left my fandom *sniff* and I miss her interpretations of the jossverse terribly. She's another one not afraid to defend her friends. Also, she is VERY assertive. She does not tolerate passive aggressive behavior, and manages to remain calm and level headed - most of the time - when outing someone for being so. I love her wit, her empathy, and her sheer delight in everything fannish. the second of the three that got me started on LJ, too.

[info]wolfling - Wolfling's journal was the first one I ever read. EVER. I don't even remember how I got to it. probably through wesleysgirl's website. But i found her fascinating. Bright, witty, talented, and oh my god, does she kick my ass with her Giles and Ethan! I don't know her as well as I'd like, she doesn't post too often anymore, but she's another fierce one. Hmm, I think I have a trend developing here....

[info]thebratqueen - funny, articulate. Talented. Also don't know her as well as I'd like, but I'm beginning to. I just recently friended her, but I read just about everything on her website. I love her sense of whimsey, her delight in her life, and her joy in fandom. She's a joy to read on my flist.

[info]tabaqui - sweetheart! Queen of Spander. Here's the thing about tabaqui. She is who she is. She's uber supportive of new writers, reads and comments, and leaves encouraging messages for new writers. She's popular, I know. But there's a reason: BECAUSE SHE ROCKS! Smart as a whip, and not afraid to share herself on LJ. I just love her sense of humor, her brain, her creativity.

[info]darkhavens - spander den mother! Thank the lords for her creating bloodclaim. She's just a wonderful example of a supportive, encouraging member of the fandom. When I first started writing Spander and posting to her community, she left amazing feedback for me. She's a wonderful mod, commenting on the members' successes and she pimps the hell out of new writers and communities. I've joined several communities because of her recommendation and learned a lot about writing from going where she leads.

[info]lazulikat - Just one of the most legendary Spander stories ever came from this woman. Repossession is one of my favorite stories, so deep and detailed and has a little bit of everything that should be in a spander story and a lot of the things that NEED to be in a spander story. Also, her Yahoo group Excessant, is host to several more spander writers and readers. She's graciously allowed space on her server as an archive site: Tales From the Attic, and she's another one who encourages newbies, as well as calling a halt to the BS that sometimes happens in fandom.

[info]tkp - tkp is not on my flist, but she is on several of my friends' lists. This chick is SMART y'all. She offers up some of the best analysis of fic I've ever seen, and it's not done in such a way as to illuminate her brain, but to illuminate the FIC. So many people try to do that - analyze and dissect a story, and most of them are showing off their own prowess at well, deconstruction of fiction, but not tkp. She ENJOYS fic! She lists the reasons why! She engages her brain and is so chuffed when others do as well. She's one that encourages the intellectualization of fanfiction, but not obviously so. I really love reading what she has to say.

[info]stoney321 - Hmmm. putting stoney on my list is probably going to get me some WTF posts, but I don't give a shit. Stoney freakin' rocks! She LOVES fandom. She loves to pick it apart and dissect it, and see what it ate for breakfast! She laughs at it, not in ridicule - ok, sometimes in ridicule but never with names!!! - but in enjoyment for the craziness that is fandom. She can also be dead on serious, and when she is? Holy Hannah, you'd better watch out. I have a couple people on my flist who will not share my opinion of her, and that's fine. I've read the reasons why - from both sides - and understand it. But it doesn't change the fact that, for me, stoney is one of the coolest fans on my flist.

[info]yin_again - Yin....I love Yin, like no tomorrow. She's always struck me as someone who cares about, well, everything. She rescues dogs, she writes like nobody's business. She shares herself with the fandom, and is always a little taken aback at how good others think she is. I remember the first time she EVER commented on a story I wrote. I was so floored, I neated up my LJ for her, and she just giggled (of course all this was done with the little asterisks *) and made me feel so comfortable and at ease. I friended her immediately and have not regretted it. She's just an awesome person to have on your flist.

I didn't make this list to offend. I didn't make it to say that these people are better than others. It's just these are the fans that illustrate my interpretation of BNF. Others may disagree with me, and that's cool. I'm interested to see who you all think are BNFs.

For what I consider to be the definition of BNF, please see the previous post.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled LJ programming.

Since you asked and our lists vary greatly.
Going with your definition here is my list though some are more prolific than others and some are not authors at all:
[info]evenstar_estel [info]eurydice72 [info]ghostgirl13 [info]kallysten [info]lit_gal [info]rune_vampyr [info]jans_intentions [info]sueworld2003 [info]toobusy2write [info]velvet_virago [info]vamptastica [info]whenbuffysmiles

I don't know most of those! I mean, sexy, Litgal, velvet are among my friends, and I've 'met' sueworld, but I don't know the rest of those guys. THIS is why I asked for other people's ideas of BNFs. To 'meet' some new LJers.

Thanks!

You probably don't know the ones like [info]evenstar_estel and [info]whenbuffysmiles because they are Spuffies. But if it wasn't for them I wouldn't have started writing or been anything more than a lurker.

[info]evenstar_estel is an amazing author but I know her mostly as an artist. Amazing original pieces that even James himself loves and now recognizes by her style at cons. (Boy does that sound crazy, but it's true!) I have a print of hers that is signed by her and James.

You can't go through one Spuffy rec list without seeing the names: [info]eurydice72, [info]kallysten and [info]whenbuffysmiles. Kally also does the Spangel loving. And if you are looking for a Spuffy epic Eurydice has tons to choose from. But Mrs. Muir aka [info]whenbuffysmiles is probably my absolute favorite person in the fandom. We met ages ago and she pretty much gave me my break into the fandom, giving me a place to post my fic (pre LJ) and helping a fledgling author. Not only that but this girl has more class in her pinky than most fen put together. Never have I heard her say a bad word about anyone no matter their opinion.

[info]ghostgirl13 runs the very popular Spuffy Awards and Spuffy archive, Nocturnal Light, and knows more Spuffy people than you can shake a stick at, betaing for half of them. She also loves to volunteer at cons. This girl is always on the go. Most know her as Yani.

[info]rune_vampyr's site Elusive Soul was my first look at Slashy manips and boy does that girl have talent. I was sad to see the site go. You know Sexy, Lit and [info]sueworld2003 and [info]velvet_virago, their work and amazing contributions to the fandom speak for themselves. All are fabulous ladies with a lot of heart.

[info]vamptastica is another artist that is recently (this past year) really breaking out. I'm constantly amazed by her. Not only that but she is so giving of herself and her time. Her posts read like a gift registry.

Finally no Spangel AU list is complete without mention of [info]toobusy2write. The girl would get 100 comments for her Bent Justice and she'd respond to every one! She's the reason I even dared to venture into Spangel at all.

For me a "Good BNF" is someone who would never want the fame the BNF name brings. They are kind, heartfelt, and giving. However, I do think some people let the popularity go to their heads and let their egos get out of control. Those are the ones that deserve the negative BNF name. I figure if you have mean and nice regular Joe fen then it stands to reason the 'popular fen' would have positive and negative members too.

Thank you for the kind words ::hugs:: I don't consider myself a BNF because I don't match my own criteria for it ::g:: but thank you. Being on a list with the people you mention is an honour.

I see BNFs as being fewer on the ground than you, I think, and people who really stand out. They don't have to be authors or certainly not prolific; they're just people who for good or ill, and all the ones on my list belong in the first category, are known, contribute, have influence.

And by influence, I don't mean have a minion army to unleash; I mean that they can get something started and turn it into a firecracker that if the rest of us tried would fizzle and spit and go out.

They're people who just have an impact and they would in whatever milieu they found themselves. Vibrant, positive, charismatic.

I'm more a middle-range person; always have been. I'm not unknown; it'd be pretty daft to say that with a f-list the size of mine; obviously some people know me, and people read me (for which I'm endlessly grateful) but I'm one of many like that.

A BNF is a whole 'nother kettle of fish ::g:;

The main reason I said you were is this:

I started on LJ reading wolfling's journal (round '04). You and WG and she got hoppin' mad about something someone had said or done to jeaopardize one of your friends (namely willa) and wow. I was done in by how tough and supportive you all were. And welcoming to new people.

I posted a comment in that thread about how wrong it was for people online to mess with other people's REAL Lives, and you were so gracious. You didn't tell me to mind my own business, but respected my opinion and encouraged me to voice it.

I just thought that was awesome. and since then, similar situations (kerfluffles and the like) have arisen, and you handle yourself with dignity and grace, and you lay it all on the line, then ya just let it go. Compared to some others I've seen since I've been on LJ, that makes you heads above them. I got a lot of respect for you, and that's why you're on my BNF list.

So there, you're just gonna have ta deal! :D

Did we really meet over a kerfuffle? I'd forgotten that! Well, it's great that something good came out of one :;snuggles you::
14th-Jun-2006 03:25 pm (UTC)
*blush* Thanks, honey. I don't know if I'm a BNF, but I'm glad I make you feel comfortable and at ease - that's a really cool thing for you to say.

It's funny but I notice that the idea of who a BNF is varies a lot depending on what part of fandom you're in.

Are BNFs who are no longer in fandom still BNFs? Or should that mantle be handed on?

I'm sure to add to this list as I think of more names but the ones that I immediately think of as BNFs are [info]sabershadowkat, [info]itsabigrock, [info]herself_nyc, [info]peasant_, [info]mpoetess, [info]eliade, [info]witling, [info]sueworld2003, [info]janedavitt, [info]tkp - and that's just for starters. I don't mind so much about Jane leaving the Buffyverse because she's writing fabulous SG1 Jack/Daniel fic!

I think that there's a subdivision - or a lower level maybe - of Well Known Fans, like [info]ely_jan and [info]crazydiamondsue.
14th-Jun-2006 08:35 pm (UTC)
jane will always be a bnf to me. I was intro'd to her through wolfling, back in 04, because - again - the thing with kindkit and glossing was coming up as well as some deal with willa, and jane just was - WOW. she was just awesome. She argued her side, stood up for her friends, and REALLY impressed the hell outta me. All three of them actually, WG, Wolf, and Jane. Just awesome ladies, they are. I consider them to be almost like den mothers (for me, anyway). They're so fierce.
14th-Jun-2006 08:26 pm (UTC)
Heeee!
BNF, eh?
Well well.
:)
Thank you for the lovely words, bay-bee. Makes me all smooshy!
I never thought much about BNF-hood. It always seemed like a 'popularity' thing and a 'flavor of the month' thing, and i never payed much attention to it. But i'm terribly flattered you think so highly of me. Thank you!
14th-Jun-2006 09:47 pm (UTC)
Never heard of this BNF business before your posts but i think the top 4 deserve the name. I'm not really active with fic. I read bits here and there but i'm more into the graphics side of fandom. Basically, if i'm looking for good stuff, people like [info]thebratqueen and [info]wesleysgirl are my first port of call. They must be big names to reach me out on the fringe. That said, i'm definitely going to be checking out the other names on your list. I hope people take this as the positive thing it's meant to be and nobody gets upset at being left off. I'm tempted to do a similar thing with icons.
15th-Jun-2006 03:31 am (UTC)
Dude, this is so sweet of you to say. I *do* love my fandom. I love my source material. I love the shows that spawned all the great fic, vids, icons that remind me of how friggin' GREAT Jossverse is.

And I get that for some folks the term BNF (of which I do not consider myself one) is negative, but to me it's the people that drew me to this place because EVERYONE knew them. And they were known because of the caliber of their craft, for the contributions in bringing folks in, prolific and excellent writing, etc. People like [info]nautibitz and [info]mrmonkeybottoms, where I first saw I wasn't the only one who loved Spike/Buffy. Then people like [info]kita0610 and [info]crazydiamondsue who not only bring a lot to the table with their great stories, but expose a huge amount of people to new writers. New writers that are recharging the juices of fandom.

So... given that, I don't think I qualify, but it is so very kind of you to say you think I bring something to fandom. I know I have fun - on both sides with the "WTF have you DONE with my characters!!?" to sharing fun/fic/music with my flist. And I do know that you'll have a handful of folks that will roll their eyes to see my name, because having an opinion that differs from "everything is good" is just horrible, but *shrug* I just come here for the fun and friendship.

And dude: AFFIRMATIVE on Yin and Tkp! Smart and thinky and great senses of humor. What's not to love?
15th-Jun-2006 04:13 pm (UTC)
I believe that the most significant requirement for being a BNF is that everybody in the fandom has to have heard of the person.

I'd never even heard of 4 of your list before and so I don't think that they qualify. Jane yes, certainly, and everybody knows [info]stoney321.

I would say that [info]herself_nyc, [info]eurydice72, and [info]crazydiamondsue are definitely BNFs. Naybe [info]kallysten too. [info]nautibitz was probably the biggest BNF of all but she's pretty much left the fandom these days.

Hmm. I agree with most of your list. A few I don't know. Will have to check them out. Someone else mentioned witling, I'd also suggest liz_marcs and nwhepcat. How do y'all get the live journal user names to link like that?
5th-Jul-2006 12:15 am (UTC)
There are some really great people that are being listed in the comments to this post. I've had a great time visiting their ljs and learning more about them.

As for getting the lj names to link:
(replace the () with <> and it's that easy.)

(lj user="ljname")
5th-Jul-2006 12:08 pm (UTC)
I'll learn how to use this stuff eventually. Thanks!
